The Sewing Bee~ Week 4

March 3, 2011

~::~

Every Thursday…

Take pictures and write a post on your blog (linking HERE to the Sewing Bee) of what it is that you are currently working on in your sewing space… whether it be hand or machine stitching.

Like minded chicas…the sharing of patterns and progress of sewing.

To inspire ourselves to keep stitching.

What could be better than that?

My Sewing Bee…

On the hoop/ sewing table~A bird mobile like the one that I made for Heather and Landon. ( that amazingly adorable and darling boy that I got to hear squawking and watch wiggling around while talking to his beautiful and sweet mama Heather on Skype the other day.)

Yay for Skype.

Anyway, this one is for my littlest nephew.  Charlie.

Currently almost 22 weeks cooked in my twins womb, I was inspired by the goods that she is making for the little one and thought….

“Well, if she’s ready to start making things for him…HERE I GO!”

And so…. indeed, here I go.

More linen napkins from my stash of thrifted treasures.

Ready to turn into a similar mobile to Heather’s.

I’ve picked out different fabric this time and I can’t decide on the combination.  I think I might go for different colored bodies this time around.

Maybe.

Maybe not.

Tomorrow I will share my pattern and tutorial for how to make one of theses yourself.

So stop back if you like.

Knitting Along…

March 2, 2011

The lovely Ginny of Small Things has come up with a weekly Yarn Along and I have been playing along.

Any excuse to knit and read, I tell ya.

My sewing room got another update.  In the form of some extra shelving courtesy of my honey.

Yip.

Eee.

He’s handy, don’t ya know?

And in the process of reorganizing and filling my new space, I pulled up my rugs to vacuum the actual carpet underneath them.  I was also able to shake the rugs free of the thread and yarn scraps from my recent projects.

But the thing about finding new space for old things, is that it gets the brain thinking about things that you wouldn’t ordinarily be thinking about.

Like adding a few more rounds to my rugs with some of my fabric yarn.

Reading~

Don’t even ask.

On the needles ( crochet hook )

A few more rounds on my smallest rug. I know that I had said that I was going to give it to a friend back then, but I honestly just couldn’t give it up.

And so I have it still.

And it’s growing.

Pattern~ mine, found here.

Every new row gets me excited for another one.

I think I might just use up the rest of my stash by the end of the week.

And that’s fine with me, I will have more room for some yummy yarn.

Ya

Hoo.

And who knows, maybe it will become as big as it’s sister rug.

Woot.

****************************************************

So, apparently I forgot to hit publish on my post for yesterday announcing the latest issue of Rhythm of The Home.

It was a long night… you understand don’t you?

Anyhow, Heather Bernadette and I couldn’t be more impressed with all of the lovely springy, bright crafts that fill it’s pages.

I am chomping at the bit to try many of them.

But for now, I share my two contributions.

A full tutorial on making a thrifty painted wooden playset just like the ones that I gifted to Nicole for her girls.  Except this one is all springy.

Yup.  I too want to jump right into that case and hop over that river and walk up the trail to Grandma’s house with Little Red Riding Hood.

And then there is my new variation on my Pear cake.  This time it has yogurt in it, and if it’s possible, it is even more delicious.

Yum.

I’ll see you tomorrow for the Sewing Bee.

Waldorf Doll pattern and tutorial for doll, dress, and hair

February 26, 2011

Patterns and tutorials are in our store!  Adirondack Patterns.

We also have a blog called  Windfall Dolls, where my sister and I give away Waldorf inspired dolls to deserving little ones.

::::::::::::

Other wise known as two sleepless nights of work.

So, I have been working on getting the Spring Issue of Rhythm of The Home edited and ready for the launch on Tuesday, and being that I didn’t want to slack off on that, I have been spending my last few nights working on my tutorials for my Waldorf Inspired dolls.

You know, because sleep is so over rated.

But they are done and full of a ridiculous amount of photos and instructions to assist in making them.

And I am in love.

I know that I say that alot, but seriously…I am.

And they are all in the storeThe patterns that is.

I promise, each one is as detailed as I can get them without sitting right next to you while you sew it.

And if you pay the airfare, I might just offer to do that as well.

************************************

Instructions and a pdf. on making the body and a little cute toque hat that can be stitched to the head to mimic a babies head of hair.

Without a face…

How to make a face…

Oh!  And she sits on her own!

No need to prop her up.

And then….instead of buying a new doll once your little one wants a more grown up little girl, there is a tutorial for adding hair to the doll.   Transitioning her into a little girl right along with your own little one.

See!  Thrifty.

She can become a Rapunzel.

You can cut it!

And style it all sorts of ways.

Oh, and that dress?!

There’s a tutorial and pattern pdf for that as well.

OK, there you have it.

*******************************************************

Disclaimer: Since I’ve already received a bit of flack about sharing these tutorials, I will explain my rationale below.

There are so many gorgeous Waldorf dolls out there.  SO many that are beautifully crafted by some unbelievable artist.

I can’t run with those BIG DOGS.

And yes, I was inspired in my creation of this doll with a basic shape and height, but I never EVER bought, stole, or used anyone elses pattern in my creation.  It is mine and mine alone.

Inspired of course, You can’t make a Waldorf Inspired Doll without certain characteristics, but I assure you that this tutorial and pattern is authentic to me.

You bet.

And my sole purpose in sharing this series of tutorials is to inspire and make it possible for other Mama’s to make a  doll for their little ones in case that they are unable to afford one of those beautiful dolls.

Because every wee one deserves to have a beautiful doll to snuggle.

Right?

Right.

Here is the link to the store… Adirondack Patterns on Etsy.

And if you can’t afford the prices, get in touch with me.  I bet we could work something out.

;)

Lots of love, Julia

This Moment…

February 25, 2011

A Friday ritual. A single photo – no words – capturing a moment from the week. A simple, special, extraordinary moment. A moment I want to pause, savor and remember. ~Soule Mama

“I’m making friends with the birds so that they will want to let me cuddle them.”

He’s a nature boy.

Like his Daddy.

And an animal lover.

Like his Mama.

I dig it.

My Sewing Bee…

On the hoop/ sewing table~ Wanna-be Waldorf dolls.

Pattern~ My own creations.

Making dolls is nothing new to me.  I have Heather and Bernadette and their getting me involved with editing for Rhythm of The Home… to thank for that.

Oooooh those damn Waldorfians….they’re contagious, didn’t you know?

I remember the first time that I saw a Waldorf Doll.

I think my smile spread from ear to ear.

And I don’t mean those snore-bag dolls without the faces. I am talking about those happy adorable smiley babies that make you just want to squeal.

Yea, those ones.

Over the year, I have made several variations on a Waldorf Doll.  My first attempt were the ROTH girls that I did a complete tutorial for the magazine readers.

And then a few months ago I developed my Waldorf baby pattern which is in the store.  I have been figuring out my own method to the madness that is Waldorf Doll making.  It is an evolving process,  and I am quite happy with the  little lovelies that have found their way out of my sewing room.

With each one that I have made I have gotten a little bit better at making the certain aspects of the doll that make it Waldorf.  My dolls are very much NOT the traditional style.   But there are deliberate little bits and pieces of the tradition intermixed in each.

And I did that on purpose….because I happen to adore the little faces and heads of those sweet little dolls.  I just can’t help myself.

I am drawn to them.

Inspired.

And so.

Even if my sewing room looks like a voodoo doll lounge.

And even if I am running out of stuffing and have taken to tearing up one of my pillows to stuff one of the little bodies on my bed.

And even if I DO perfect the design that is evolving in my head and at my fingertips at the moment…. (the closest thing to a true Waldorf Doll that I will ever make.)

Update::::::::      LINK to doll patterns in the shop.

It will still have my spin on it.

My undeniable stamp of Quirk.

My dolls will always be different and unique in their own way.

A little Mainstream mixed with a little Crunchy, just like ME.

A mix.

And I am Sooooo good with that.

Now….Tell me.

Have you ever made a doll? And not just a Waldorf….I mean any doll?

Tell me all about it please.

Knitting Along…The short version…

February 23, 2011

Well, unfortunately, this is going to be short.

I’m sorry, but I am trying to type up the index for the Spring Edition of Rhythm of The Home that goes LIVE in T minus 6 days.

I KNOW!

I’m pretty psyched too.

Anyway, on with the fiber love for today.

Joining in with the darling Ginny.

Reading~

The Forgotten Garden.

I know!

SHOCKING, huh.  ;) .

On the needles~

A wee little wig.

Yes, you read that right.

No, not for me. ( although I probably could use one.) It’s for a bald little friend that I am making.

Kind of like her…

My prototype.

but WAY BETTER.

And no, that is not Penelope.

I will be back tomorrow for the sewing bee… to share more on the doll making homefront.  Until then, I wish you all a lovely February day.

XOXO, Jules.
